Undergraduate & Postgraduate Scholarships available for study in Japan – apply now!




The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is offering scholarships for British students to study at Japanese universities, with two types of scholarships available:

Japanese Government (MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarship
The postgraduate scholarship programme is for a period of 18 months to two years and is awarded to UK graduates who wish to pursue independent research or enrol on a postgraduate course at a Japanese university.

Subjects are open to any discipline, however those who wish to study Law, Japanese History and Japanese literature must have high level of Japanese ability at the time of the application.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarship
The undergraduate scholarship programme is for a period of five years, including one year preparatory course in the Japanese language, and is awarded to British nationals who wish to study Social Sciences, Humanities or Natural Sciences at a Japanese University.

What does it cost?
Successful applicants to the scholarships will receive:

– All tuition fees paid for
– A monthly allowance of 143,000 yen per month for the postgraduate scholarship and 117,000 yen per month for the undergraduate scholarship. This amount should cover living costs, including university accommodation, while in Japan
– return airfare from Japan (upon completion of their study)
– Japanese language courses will also be offered if your level is insufficient.

Postgraduate scholarship: you must be a British postgraduate student and hold a UK passport. Applicants are requested to have minimum 2:1 in final degree classification and applicants over the age of 35 are asked to contact the Embassy of Japan before applying.

Undergraduate scholarship: you must be a British national and have completed 12 years of school education or graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan. Applicants that will be over the age of 21 as of April 2018 are asked to contact the Embassy of Japan before applying.

Applications are open for scholarships starting in April and October 2018.

Thursday 1 June 2017 at 5pm (GMT) for postgraduate scholarships starting in April or October 2018.

Friday 9 June 2017 at 5pm (GMT) for undergraduate scholarships starting in April 2018.

The deadlines are strictly enforced and MEXT are unable to accept any applications received after this time.
