New to GCU Careers
Thursday 22 January 3.00 – 4.00

A session to help you understand the support that the Careers Service can offer you from early career planning to writing effective CVs for part-time jobs, internships and graduate opportunities in the UK and globally.

International Shortbread Extravaganza
Friday 23 January 11.30-12.30

Come to our shortbread tasting session and meet the international careers adviser. Have an informal chat and biscuit quiz while experiencing the delights of the famous Scottish shortbread biscuit!

Effective CVs and applications
Thursday 29 January 3.00 – 4.00

Learn how to create strong and effective CVs. Find out how you can improve and tailor your CV to impress that employer and get you noticed. We will also look at the different approaches you need to develop for online applications.

By the end of the session you will know about:

  • Different styles and content for CVs
  • Top tips for tailoring your CV
  • Promote your skills, experience and achievements
  • How to deal confidently with online competency based questions
  • The language that will get employers’ attention
  • Support offered by the careers team

Prepare for the Fair  
Thursday 5 February 3.00 – 4.00

Graduate Fairs in the UK may be different to those run in your home country. Fairs can be organised by theme or can cover a variety of businesses and organisations. Virtual Fairs can also being organised to help students and graduates have a dialogue with companies around the globe. In Scotland, there are two major Graduate Fairs held every year, in March and October. This year the Spring Graduate Fair will be held on Wednesday 11 February in Glasgow University Students’ Union.

This session will help you to:

  • Prepare for Graduate Fairs
  • Develop the networking skills you need to impress at a fair
  • Talk confidently to employers
  • Find out dates and locations of fairs

Successful CVs
Thursday 12 February 3.00 – 4.00                           

Learn how to create strong and effective CVs. Find out how you can improve and tailor your CV to impress employers and get you noticed. By the end of the session you will know about:

  • Different styles and structures for CVs
  • Top tips for tailoring and targeting your CV
  • Promoting your skills, experience and achievements
  • The language that will get employers’ attention
  • Support offered by the careers team

Graduate Job Search, including Social Media
Thursday 26 February 3.00 – 4.00

Learn how to develop your job search skills for future graduate employment. Improve your chances of finding graduate jobs by identifying identify the most useful sources of vacancies. This session will help you to:

  • Develop your job search strategy
  • Research graduate opportunities
  • Understand the UK graduate labour market
  • Improve job search and networking through social media, for example, LinkedIn
  • Get support from the careers team

Interview skills                      
Thursday 5 March 3.00-4.00

Where: Seminar Room 1, Level 1 of Saltire Centre* (Please note the change of venue for this event, previously advertised as being held in Careers Events Space, Level 0, Saltire Centre). To get to Seminar Room 1, come up the ramp for the Saltire Centre and walk straight through the wooden doors straight ahead – Seminar Room 1 is on the left hand side.

Learn how to impress at interviews and be really prepared for the different styles of questions that you might be asked. This session will help you to:

  • Develop active listening skills
  • Identify typical interview questions
  • Be confident when answering competency based question
  • Learn useful interview hints and tips
  • Know how to arrange a practice interview with a careers adviser at GCU

CV workshop
Thursday 19 March 3.00 –4.00

By the end of the session you will know about:

  • The language that will get employers’ attention
  • Support offered by the careers team

New to GCU and Going Global
Thursday 26 March 3.00 – 4.00

An informal  session to help you understand the support that the Careers Service can offer you from early career planning to writing effective CVs for part-time jobs, internships and graduate opportunities in the UK and globally.

Also learn about GoinGlobal, an excellent new resource for all GCU students and recent graduates. Packed full of advice for finding information and jobs at home or abroad. An opportunity to find out the key information that will help you to ‘go global’!

By the end of this session you will know how to:

  • Get support from the careers team
  • Search for UK and global opportunities – graduate and internships
  • Find out key information for applications through extensive Country Profiles
  • Research company information
  • Make the most of accessing ‘Going Global’
